The Participant Process

Screening & Sign-up

Visiting the website to learn about the study. Checking if you can join, getting your okay to participate, and using your postal code to pinpoint your location.

Session 1

2nd Trimester  (Start of week 13 to end of week 27) Initial assessment (about you). Collect a small poop sample to send by mail, fill out a questionnaire online.

Session 2

3rd Trimester(Start of week 28 to end of pregnancy) Follow-up assessments (about you). Collect a small poop sample to send by mail, fill out a questionnaire.

BABY IS BORN

Baby sign-up (Between delivery and 2 months of age / post delivery. Review the electronic medical record for you and your baby.

Session 3

3 months (Between 90 and 100 days after delivery). Follow-up assessment (about you and your baby). Collect a small poop sample from you and your baby to send them by mail, fill out a questionnaire.

Session 4

9 months (Between 270 and 280 days after delivery / birth). Follow-up assessment (about you and your baby). Collect a small poop sample from you and your baby to send them by mail, fill out a questionnaire, child neuropsychological assessment.

Session 5

18 months (Between 540 and 550 days after delivery / birth). Follow-up assessment (about your and your baby). Collect a small poop sample from your baby to send by mail, fill out a questionnaire, child neuropsychological assessment.

Session 6

36 months (Between 1,080 and 1,090 days after). Follow-up assessment (about you and your baby). Collect a small poop sample from your baby to send by mail, fill out a questionnaire, child neuropsychological test, record how you and your baby interact, review the electronic medical record for you and your baby.

How to Collect the Stool Samples?

In the SPPIN study, participants are asked to collect stool samples both for themselves and their children. The process is straightforward and can be done in the comfort of your own home. For each session, participants will receive a kit by mail containing clear instructions and all necessary materials. Once the samples are collected, participants securely package them and return them to our lab using a prepaid envelope. It is is a simple and convenient process.
